History : The old noble houses of Montussan under the authority Château Lamothe were Fonchereau, La Moune, Puymiran and Taillefer. Guilhon, in his book « The Gironde’s Châteaux », makes the following comments on Fonchereau: the house is a building pressed on a XVI century tower altered in the XVII century. It houses a chapel and a beautiful pigeon house. The Lord had the right of reprimand and exile and he had a burial right in the Montussan’s Church. Fonchereau belonged to Messier Gilles de Geneste, President of the Parliament during the first half of the XVII century. In 1647 Jean Talartry, Finance Treasurer of Guyenne, became it’s owner, later on, in 1719 it was the Knight’s François de Cursol property, then it belonged to the Lady de Guimps, cousin of Montaigne, and its successors until 1863. The life in the Château Fonchereau, right before de French Revolution was the subject of research of Carole Rathier (Bordeaux III University), who studied the correspondence received by Madame de Cursol from her mother Madame Duplessy, between 1768 and 1782 (756 letters in all).During the contemporary period, Mister Thibaud was the owner before handing it over the Vinot-Postry’s family in 1940. In 2006, the vineyard was acquired by an international investment group. Geographical situation: ![]() is located at 24 miles from Bordeaux’s downtown, the airport and Saint-Emilion. The residence is surrounded by 50 acres, 30 devoted to the wines and 20 of woods and meadows. The cultivated field, protected as it is by the forest around it, generates a remarkable microclimate which preserves the vineyard from hail and the freezing. The light slope of the grounds which allows the rain water to run off easily is another natural factor which accounts for the high wine quality of the argillaceous low register. Truly set up like a garden, the vineyard is the subject of extremely meticulous control inspired as we are by the deep respect for the soil and high regard for ecological balance. This land has passed the test of time.
The type of vine is composed as follows: Red: - 60% Merlot White: - 100% Semillion - 20% Cabernet Sauvignon - 20% Cabernet Franc
The very traditional wine making process allows for a great variety such as: Bordeaux Blanc, Bordeaux Rosé, White and Rosé Brut Cremant and Bordeaux Superior and Bordeaux Red. The vineyard counts with the advice of the oenologists Gilles Pauquet and Stéphane Toutoundji.
In Fonchereau, the human quality of its people and the savoir-faire are qualities that have been renowned over the past centuries, as the History testifies. ![]() Our products were selected in many and diverse events and were medal-holders on many occasions these 15 last years. Fonchereau 2001, the Rosé 2005 and the White Cremant were selected for the presentation of the BABEL movie at the 59th Festival of Cannes in 2006.
